“Working from home can be hard on a kid”

Hi my name is Gavin. I live in Southfield, Michigan.

I used to go to school as a fifth grader. Over my past years at my school, our main subjects have been writing, reading, math, social studies, and science. Now we do writing, math, and a little bit of social studies.

Working from home can be hard on a kid. You don’t get to see your friends, you aren’t allowed a recess time, but for most kids they just fake the work and they’re like, “We don’t get recess time, yay!” Because all the time is recess time.

I feel like staying at home during this time is an opportunity for most kids to be like, “Ok, let’s get lazy, let’s watch TV all the time, let’s play video games,” but if we do that all the time we won’t be consistent in our lives. If this is over, we will have no direct mentality and it will be harder to turn back to normal living.

As a kid I feel like we should continue to do our work and teachers should continue to use Google classroom and kids should have weekly Zoom meetings if possible, just to see their friends’ faces, to understand the work if they have any questions, and keep control.

  1. I agree that consistency, learning and growing is important for everyone during this time, no matter what their age. It is too easy to get stale otherwise! Thank you for sharing your experiences and thoughts. I hope you get to see your friends soon.
